Motorization

A motor unit for a motorized shade

Light and privacy on your schedule.

Motorization started as a luxury upgrade and became a standard specification. Cords are a safety liability in homes with children, and manual operation is impractical for high windows or grouped openings.

Motorized window treatments give you light when you want it and privacy when you need it, at the touch of a button.

How motorization
works

We work across four platforms: Dooya, Motion, Somfy and Lutron. The platform is specified per project rather than fixed, so the shade answers to whatever the building already runs. Our standard motor is battery-powered, so no hardwiring is needed at the window and motorization stays practical as a retrofit. Battery life runs to months of daily operation before recharging, and the motor design allows easy battery access without removing the shade from the window.

App, remote and
smart home

The Motion Blinds system supports app control, remote operation, wall switch control, and direct integration with Amazon Alexa, Google Home and Apple HomeKit. Group control links any number of shades so they respond to a single command, set by room, floor or function.

Platforms and
integration

Dooya and Motion cover most residential work. Somfy and Lutron are the platforms specified on high-end residential and commercial projects where shade control is part of a whole-room or whole-building lighting and automation design, including Lutron RadioRA and Caséta. On those, a single keypad press can adjust shade positions and lighting levels together. Our team works with architects, designers and system integrators to confirm the right motor and control configuration.

What can be
motorized

Motorization is available across most of our window treatments. A clean cassette housing and consistent fabric surface make roller shades ideal, especially in rooms with multiple windows. Motorized cellular shades remove the cord system from a product that usually needs one, which is particularly useful for top-down bottom-up configurations. Motorized Roman shades use a rear roller mechanism with no visible cords on the fabric face. Woven wood shades are available with motorized roll-up operation.

Common questions

Do motorized shades need to be hardwired?
No. Our standard motorized shades are battery-powered, so no electrician or wiring work is required during installation. Hardwired options are available for new construction projects where power is already available at the window.
Which smart home systems are compatible?
We work across four motorization platforms: Dooya, Motion, Somfy and Lutron, including Lutron RadioRA and Caséta. Shades also integrate directly with Amazon Alexa, Google Home and Apple HomeKit, and the Motion Blinds app works as a standalone control interface for anyone who would rather not use a smart home platform.
Can I control multiple shades at once?
Yes. Group control links any number of motorized shades so they respond to a single command. You can set groups by room, floor or function, and adjust all of them at once from a remote, keypad, app or schedule.
