California Proposition 65

WARNING: These products can expose you to chemicals including DEHP, lead, formaldehyde and cobalt, which are known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. For more information go to www.P65Warnings.ca.gov.

What Proposition 65 is

California’s Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, known as Proposition 65, requires businesses to warn Californians about significant exposures to chemicals the state has listed as causing cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. The list runs to roughly 900 chemicals and is updated at least once a year.

A warning does not mean a product is unsafe or violates any safety standard. It means the product may expose you to a listed chemical, and that California requires you to be told.

Which products this applies to

Window coverings are assemblies. The fabric, the hardware, the finish and any treatment each come from different suppliers, so the chemicals that may be present depend on what is specified.

Roller shade fabrics containing PVC

Some fabrics in our range are PVC-based. Our Basic collection, for example, is 75% PVC and 25% glass fibre. PVC materials may contain phthalates.

May contain: DEHP (di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate), DINP (diisononyl phthalate) — known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm.

Metal hardware and decorative brackets

Brackets, cassettes, bottom bars and chain components are metal. Copper alloys, including the brass used in some decorative finishes, may contain lead.

May contain: Lead and lead compounds — known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm.

Wood, faux wood and shutter components

Composite panels, adhesives and finishes used in blinds and shutters may release formaldehyde.

May contain: Formaldehyde (gas) — known to the State of California to cause cancer.

Treated textiles and liners

Some fabrics and liners carry flame-retardant or performance treatments.

May contain: Antimony trioxide — known to the State of California to cause cancer.

Motorized shades with lithium-ion batteries

Our motorized shades use a rechargeable lithium-ion battery in the headrail. Lithium-ion cells and their associated wiring and circuitry are a common source of listed chemicals, and cells of this type routinely carry a Proposition 65 warning from their own manufacturers.

May contain: Cobalt and cobalt compounds, Nickel and nickel compounds, Lead and lead compounds, DEHP (di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate) — known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm.

What we are doing

We are collecting Proposition 65 declarations from our fabric mills and component suppliers so that the chemicals listed above can be confirmed or ruled out per product line rather than stated as a general possibility. As those declarations arrive, this page will name what applies to which product, and stop naming what does not.

Lithium-ion batteries

Motorized shades ship with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. Beyond Proposition 65, lithium batteries are separately regulated in transport, and those rules govern how a motorized shade is packed, labelled and shipped. That is a different regime from this page and is handled at despatch.

Information for dealers

Forma Living sells through dealers. Where a dealer sells a product to a consumer in California, the point-of-sale warning obligation generally sits with that seller. Our role is to pass warning information down the chain so you have what you need.

Products shipped to California destinations carry warning labelling. If you need a written Proposition 65 statement for a specific order, fabric or component, ask us and we will provide what our suppliers have given us.
